01What it is

An official record, used abroad.

A death certificate is the official record of a death, issued by the vital records office of the state where the death happened. It is apostilled by that state, not by the state where the family lives.

Families usually need it apostilled to settle an estate or inheritance in another country, close bank accounts, claim a pension or insurance, transfer property, or register the death abroad. Citizenship-by-descent files often include the death certificate of an ancestor.

02What you need first

Start with the right version of the document.

  1. 01

A certified copy from vital records

Only a certified copy issued by the state or a local vital records office can be apostilled. Photocopies and informational copies cannot.

  2. 02

Ordered by someone who is eligible

States limit who can order a certified death certificate, usually close family and legal representatives. If you can order it, you can have it sent straight to our office.

  3. 03

    Recently issued, if asked

Some foreign offices want a copy issued in the last few months. We check that before you order.

03Missouri and Kansas

How it works in each state.

  1. 01

    Missouri

A certified copy from the Missouri Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City or a Missouri local public health agency, apostilled by the Missouri Secretary of State. No notary is involved.

  2. 02

    Kansas

A certified copy from the KDHE Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka, apostilled by the Kansas Secretary of State. No notary is involved.

  3. 03

    Other states and federal documents

A death in another state is apostilled by that state’s Secretary of State. A Consular Report of Death of a U.S. Citizen Abroad is a federal document, authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.
